Weekend wrecks fatal to two area residents

Two separate wrecks over the weekend were fatal to two young area residents, according to the Arkansas State Police.

On Saturday, March 24, Michael Garrett Jones, 20, of Nashville died in a one-vehicle wreck on Highway 278 west of Billings Road near Center Point. The accident was reported at 8:34 p.m.

According to Trooper Travis Hale’s report, Jones was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado west on when he ran off the road and collided with a tree then overturned. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene by Howard County Coroner Roddy Smith.

Weather and road conditions were listed as clear and dry.

On Sunday, March 25, Steven Howell, 23, of Okolona was killed in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 26 west near Okolona in Clark County. The accident was reported at 8:10 p.m.

According to ASP Cpl. Christopher S. Harper, Howell was a passenger in a 2000 Ford Mustang driven by Ashton Wallace, 30. The Mustang was eastbound on Highway 26 when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Howell was pronounced dead at the scene by Clark County Coroner Tim Welch.

Wallace, Dustin Howell, 24, and an unnamed female minor, all of Okolona, were injured in the wreck.

Weather and road conditions were listed as cloudy and dry.
