The Nashville School Board recognized the Scrappers and Scrapperettes Monday night as they prepare for the state Class 4A baseball and softball championship games Friday at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

Superintendent Doug Graham called the players “a special group. It’s very fitting to recognize both teams. They’ve had a great couple of weeks at district, regionals and state. Yesterday [Monday], both teams punched their ticket to Baum Stadium and Bogle Park. We’re awfully proud of them. We wish you the best of luck and can’t wait until Friday.”

Members of both teams introduced themselves, and coaches made brief comments to the board.

Baseball Coach Kyle Slayton said the Scrappers have won 22 of their last 23 games. They earned the first district championship since 2003 and the first regional title of his tenure at Nashville.

Softball Coach Jerry Baker noted that he is “married to Ms. Lucky [Tina Baker]. But I’m officially Mr. Lucky for being with these little girls the last two years.”

The Bakers are leaving after the academic year and will return to Texas to be near family.
