TIS THE SEASON. Congratulations to the chamber of commerce for the great Christmas parade, and for carrying on the tradition of the Christmas Bucks promotion of Nashville businesses!

The parade was great, as you can tell from this issue’s photos. I am especially proud of my fellow parishioners at St. Martin’s on the float which won first place. To my knowledge, this is the first time our small church has had any kind of entry in any parade.

I am sorry the Scrapper band didn’t lead the parade with some snappy Christmas carols.  Glad to see some businesses participate for the first time.

I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU what I want for Christmas, but I’m having a little trouble.

We’ve gotten Santa letters from about a thousand kids ranging from daycare to juvenile delinquent, and I’ve had to typeset practically all of them.

So, I’m asking Santa for some drugs.

ON A RELATED NOTE. In a study conducted in 2013, researchers found that 1 in every 6 Americans reported taking a psychiatric drug. Further, twice as many women as men took such medications.

I am not smart enough to connect any dots here. All I can do is tell you that something is tickling me between the ears. And, if a woman had my job she’d be taking twice as much drugs. At least, I think that’s what it all means. Chuckles aside, when will this country really address its drug addiction problem?

AND IS ANYONE ELSE disturbed that the CIA secretly notified congressmen of both parties that Russia had meddled in our Presidential election? I know this news came out  earlier, but it just didn’t gain any traction in the media.

The Ruskies apparently ‘leaked’ stuff about the Democrats but did not leak anything about the Republicans. Some observers have recklessly assumed that the Ruskies wanted Comrade President-elect Trump to win. How unfair, he said sarcastically!

Our incoming chief executive says that it is just more Democrat whining and the corrupt media.

My belief is that Hillary didn’t win because enough people in enough states didn’t like or trust her; the ‘leaked’ info was just icing on the cake. Still, I don’t like any other nation fiddling around with our elections.

Unless …. maybe Comrade Putin can arrange for me to get a little bump in my Social Security.

BLACKFACE IN BLEVINS. The school board member should be ashamed, but he cannot be forced to resign. The ‘blackface’ costume is an extension of free speech, however objectionable. I understand the humiliation and disgust black citizens felt. The school board member was insensitive to do this — even at a private party. We expect our elected officials to lead from the high road.

So, he should be ashamed. And the offended citizens should look around for a suitable candidate to run against him when that school board seat opens next. Then, work for that candidate’s successful race. That would be a lesson for all to see.

Congratulations to the Hempstead County sheriff who let the Blevins superintendent know he could not make the protesting citizens leave a public meeting being held in a public place.

It is not comfortable, but we are seeing citizen-based government in action. It is all best done in the sunlight. And with some respect for each other.

WANT TO REALLY get scared about America?

An article in the CNN online news site says that 7.5 of every 1,000 newborn babies now are born addicted to heroin or some other drug.

The tragedy is especially — and oddly — bad in rural areas. The article says that addicted rural moms turn to heroin because it is now harder to get the prescriptive opioid drugs to which they were originally addicted.

I couldn’t bear to read the part of the article which described the withdrawal agony that the tiny babies were going through because mommy was a drug addict.

I have no sympathy for those moms. My heart breaks for the child.

But — 7.5 out of every 1,000? That is scary.

Why are we losing the war on drugs? Why are there so many articles about people abusing children?

THE TWINS. I enjoyed a toe-tapping visit with Rock and Roll. They just don’t make musical siblings like they used to. I wouldn’t even let their cousins, Rap and Hip-Hop, in the same room with us.

SHE SAID: “Faith is salted and peppered through everything at Christmas. And I love at least one night by the Christmas tree to sing and feel the quiet holiness of that time that’s set apart to celebrate love, friendship, and God’s gift of the Christ child.”Amy Grant, Christian music performer
