A Murfreesboro woman was cited for two misdemeanor charges after her young kids went on a short and destructive drive in her van Saturday, according to Murfreesboro Police Chief Randy Lamb.

Sonya A. Fugitt, 40, was cited for two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor following an incident reported on West Dixon Street. Lamb said when officers arrived they found a green van resting against a house and two sections of fence down nearby.

The owner of the home, Mozella Turner, reported she was inside when she felt the entire house shake. She quickly went outside and found the van against her home and also observed two small children exiting the vehicle. Fugitt soon arrived on the scene and told the homeowner that it was her kids – ages 5 and 6 – who managed to start the van, drive it across the road and take out the fence before hitting the home. She said the kids had taken the van’s keys from a counter.

The children were not injured, Lamb noted. Apparently one child steered while the other worked the gas pedal, as it appeared no brakes were used before impact with the home. The home showed no visible signs of damage. Damage estimates to the fence, owned by Glynda Kizzia, has not yet been determined.
