A former Murfreesboro Hardware store employee is expected to be charged this week with stealing more than $1,000, and maybe more, from the store’s cash register.

Andrew J. Smith, 21, who has a Mineral Springs address and resides in Murfreesboro, was arrested March 28 at the Villa Apartments, according to Murfreesboro Police Chief Randy Lamb. Smith is currently on probation for theft and breaking or entering charges in Howard County.

The theft was discovered when store manager Phil Terrell reviewed security video and reportedly saw Smith take money on at least two different occasions. Lamb said the total amount of money taken could increase as more surveillance footage is reviewed.

Smith denied stealing the money but “did admit to exchanging bills for ones that were from the year 1995” – Smith’s birth year.

Unattended death

The body of a Murfreesboro woman found March 28 has been sent to the state crime lab but no foul play is suspected in her death, according to Murfreesboro Police Chief Randy Lamb.

Lamb said he was called to a Village Circle home at 9:45 a.m. Julia Dean Link, 64, was found unresponsive at the home and after medics detected no vital signs she was pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Coroner Michelle Feuget.

Lamb said the body was sent to the crime lab as part of standard procedure and the incident is considered an “unattended death.”
