According to Montgomery County Sheriff David White, an arrest warrant has been issued as the result of an incident involving a gun found on school property during a recent basketball game at Mount Ida.

Sheriff White stated that on December 1, while Mount Ida High School was playing host to the Oden Timberwolves, a student allegedly found a gun in the gymnasium and turned it in to the school resource officer.

Mount Ida Superintendent Hal Landrith stated that when the firearm was turned in they were able to go to the school’s video surveillance equipment. He stated that school officials were allegedly able to see the firearm fall out of someone’s pocket when they went picked their jacket up.

“The surfeillance system has been a God send to us.” Superintendent Landrith stated.

Superintendent Landrith stated that at that time the issue was turned over to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Superintendent Landrith law enforcement officers escorted the man, identified as Elton Ellison, age 54 of Oden, off the school premises.

All evidence regarding the case, including video footage from the school’s surveillance system was turned over to the prosecuting attorney’s office for further review.

Sheriff White stated this afternoon that Ellison has been accused of bringing the firearm onto the school campus and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He will be charged with carrying a firearm in a publicly owned facility.

Sheriff White stated that there was no evidence of ill intent on the part of the accused, nor was anyone in immediate danger at the time of the incident.

“This is one of those unfortunate situations. He’s not a bad guy, but this could have been a bad situation.” Sheriff White stated.
