The Nashville Scrappers “eliminated a lot of missed assignments and mental busts” during their second scrimmage of fall practice Friday morning, according to Coach Mike Volarvich.

“We had a couple of illegal procedures, a couple of balls on the ground,” Volarvich said, “but compared to the first scrimmage [Aug. 8], this one showed much improvement.”

The Scrappers “got a lot of good reps today,” Volarvich said after the scrimmage. “We got in a bunch in a short period of time. I saw some good and bad. We made a couple of big plays offensively. The defense wants to prevent that. There are very few scrimmages that coaches are all totally happy with.”

Volarvich said the Scrappers are “starting to find our identity offensively.”

On defense, “We have some guys that fly around really well. They continue to improve.”

Volarvich said the coaching staff will review the video of the scrimmage as the team prepares for this week’s Back-to-School Bash and next week’s scrimmage with El Dorado.

“Film is never as good or as bad as it seems,” he said.

After practicing at different times for the first two weeks of August, the team will settle into the routine of fourth block practices now that school is back in session.

“We’ll lift. We’ll watch film” before hitting the field, according to Volarvich. “It’s nice to get them back. Kids are kids. Now we’re on a routine. It’s good to be on our regular schedule.”

The Scrappers have two events left before the season opens Sept. 4.

The Orange and Black Back-to-School Bash will be held Friday, Aug. 21, at Scrapper Stadium. Details may be found on page 1A of today’s Leader.
