Sylvester Chambers, age 78, of Umpire, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015. He was born on January 13, 1937, at Umpire, the son of Otis Chambers and Orphia Kersey Chambers. A retired poultry farmer and tree planter, he enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years.   He was a member of the Athens Missionary Baptist Church. He is survived by three children, Connie Patterson, and her husband, Roy, Sr., of DeQueen, Diane Baker and her husband, Freddie, Sr., of Vandervoort and Melvin Chambers of DeQueen; five grandchildren, Freddie Baker, Jr. and his wife, Lyndi, Shanea Floyd and her husband, Brandon, Tim Thornton and his wife, Aliesha, Roy Patterson, Jr. and James Patterson; eight great-grandchildren, Cody Baker, Katelyn Baker, Makaya Floyd, Luke Floyd, Lacy Floyd, Tyler Thornton, Quinton Thornton and Payne Thornton; one brother, Jerry Chambers and his wife, Leda, of Umpire; three sisters, Twyla James of Charlotte, North Carolina, Jackie Linville of Umpire and Geneva Chambers of Dierks; several nieces and nephews; and his special friends, Vernell and Sonny White, James Burgess and Keith Alexander. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 19, 2015, in the Athens Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Scott Kitchens and Bro. John Henry Williams officiating. Private interment was held in the Athens Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood. Guest registry is at www.davis-smith.com.
