Pair of Scrappers compete at decathlon

scrapper starCABOT – Nashville High School athletes Sam Cogburn and Austin Gibbs earned middle-of-the-pack placement Thursday and Friday while competing in the 2015 Arkansas Decathlon.


According to the Arkansas Activities Association, Cogburn placed 35th in the 73-man competition, finishing with 4,247 points, while Gibbs placed 36th with 4,218. Both are sophomore members of the Scrapper track team.
As his placement indicates, Cogburn was the more dominant of the two overall, finishing the 100m dash in 12.10, completing an 18’6” long jump, throwing a 35’1 1/4” shot put, clearing 5’9” in the high jump and finishing the 400m run in 55.91. Gibbs, meanwhile, ran a 12.05 100m dash, leapt 17’4 3/4” in the long jump, threw a 26’10” shot put, managed a 5’1” performance in the high jump and finished the 400m run in 57.30. Each of the competitions took place in the first day of the event.
On day two, Cogburn continued to perform, finishing the 110m hurdles in 17.47, throwing 60’1 3/4” in the discus, turning in a 33’1 3/4” triple jump and completing a 1500m run in 5:39.02. He failed to qualify in the pole vault competition, which was held the same day.
Gibbs was close behind with a 19.09 effort in the hurdles, a 72’8” throw in the discus, an 8’6 1/4” pole vault, a 35’6” triple jump and a 5:12.22 finish in the 1500m run.
