GlendaRice[1]

Glenda B. Rice

Glenda B. Rice was called home on Thursday, June 18, 2015.  She has accepted a full time position tending the flower beds just inside Heaven’s Pearly Gates.

Born in Center Point, Ark., on June 25, 1947, the daughter of Glen O’ Neal Billings and Elva B. Mitchell (both deceased), Glenda was no stranger to hard work. Whether it was picking peaches or planting perennials, Glenda loved the feeling of the sun on her skin and the dirt in her hands.  She was a woman of uncommon courage, commitment, and faith.

Glenda was a rural letter carrier for the US Postal Service for 25 years and regularly enjoyed visiting with those on her route – whom she considered her extended family.  She was easily recognized on her route by the many “JUST SMILE!” stickers covering the bumper of her car.  Glenda was an active member of the Nashville community; she contributed time, money, and a million smiles to Howard County Farmers Market, the Red Dirt Master Gardeners Club, and several local churches.

Glenda loved to laugh. The movie “The Bucket List” took on a special meaning after her initial diagnosis of brain cancer. She was the most joyful of cancer patients.  She fought the illness each day with courage from a foundation of faith and her steadfast canine companion, Newbie.  She travelled with friends and family and continued tending her garden. Remarkably, after a lifetime of uneasiness around the water, she even learned how to swim! She did it all with a smile on her face and joy in her heart.

Glenda is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Perry Earl Rice, and by her three daughters, Terry Lynn (Rice) Broach, Ginger Gayle (Rice) Blue, and Robyn Dana (Rice) Miller. She also leaves behind two dear brothers, Jim and Bud Billings, her step-mother Mary Jo Dildy Billings, and eight grandchildren — Tyler, Ace, Bailey, Keeley, Reagan, Kennedy, Madi, and Remington — whom she spoiled often. Devonda Furr and Bryan Billings are Glenda’s much loved niece and nephew. She was preceded in death by her brother, Douglas Devon Billings.

Memorial donations may be made to the Howard County Farmers’ Market, 107 South Main Street, Nashville, AR 71852, or to Howard County Foster Parent Association,2079 Hwy 371 West, Nashville, AR 71852.

Services were Sunday, June 21, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Cross Point Cowboy Church, Highway 371 west of Nashville with Jimmy Dale, and Don Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Corinth Cemetery under the direction of Nashville Funeral Home. The family received friends at the funeral home on Saturday afternoon from 3 to 5 p.m. You may send the family an online sympathy message to www.nashvillefh.com.

He drilled some of the largest producing oil-fields in the world. He was an extremely hard worker who took great pride in his work.

When he ended his drilling career, he and his wife returned to Delight, AR, where it all began. There, he continued planting roots for their future, literally.

Thomas Philip Watson, 81, was born August, 31, 1933, in Nashville, Ark., the youngest child of Jordan Franklin and Frieda (Pryor) Watson. His early years were spent on a peach orchard.  Throughout his youth, he was a stand-out athlete, excelling at football, basketball, baseball and track. Soon after graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a control tower operator during the Korean Conflict. Throughout his years in the service he faithfully kept a promise made to his mother, to write her every day.

After his discharge he returned to Arkansas to attend Harding College. While there he met and married Jacqueline Messick and in 1961 they welcomed a daughter, Angela Joyce to their lives.  Later that year the family moved to Oklahoma City for him to teach speech and debate at, what was then, Oklahoma Christian College. Soon, his additional talents were recognized and he was made Vice President for Development. In this capacity he traveled across the state promoting and raising funds for the college. In September of 1963 he lost both Jackie and Angie in a tragic accident.

In 1964 Phil married Mary Alice Parks; a union that would last just over 51 years. Mary Rebecca and Phylis Ann were adoring “Daddy’s Girls” who completed their family.

In 1967 Phil became the full-time minister for the Edmond Church of Christ. His involvement in local civic activities during this time included being a member of the Edmond Hospital Board and the YMCA Board. These roles paved the way for his transition into Oklahoma politics. In 1972 he was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate as the first Republican to represent district 41. He held that office for 15 years earning great respect from his colleagues on both sides of the aisle as he worked to help the citizens of our state.

Governor Henry Bellmon asked Phil to assume a new role in Oklahoma state government, so in 1987 he resigned his senate seat and was appointed Director of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. During his tenure he visited every one of the 77 county DHS offices in the state and proudly continued his passion for seeing to the needs of others.

At the end of Governor Bellmon’s term, Phil made the transition to federal government when he began working with the Rural Development Cooperative in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He ended his years of public service when he retired in 1998.

In 1983 Phil was approached by his long-time mentor and friend, Dr. George Benson, about working with mission efforts in Zambia, Africa. This began the work most near and dear to Phil’s heart. Phil eventually accepted the position of Chairman of the Board for the Zambia mission efforts while Mary assumed duties as secretary, bookkeeper, and correspondent for the work.

Phil was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Jackie, and daughter Angie; brothers James Clyde, Robert Collins, Jordan Floyd, William Ordis, John Rollin, Paul Alexander; sisters Lois Marie Womack, and Mary Jordine Hausman.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Edmond; daughter Mary Rebecca (Becky) Walderbach and husband Scott of Edmond, Okla.; daughter Phylis Frye and husband Jonathan of Houston, Texas;   grandsons William Watson Walderbach, Hamilton Rhys Frye, Harrison Reid Frye, and Robert Rolland Walderbach; special family friend, Dr. James Crowder, and a host of nieces, nephews and close personal friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Zambia Mission Schools in Phil’s honor.

“It Is Well, It Is Well With My Soul”

A woman of talent, quiet kindness and grace, Mary Lyons, 85, ascended into joy on Monday, Feb. 2, 2015, after several months of illness. Friends and family were fortunate to be able to spend her last few quiet peaceful days with her.

They formed many lasting friendships while living abroad. They later returned to Nashville where they happily raised their children and became a vital part of the community.

Those who were blessed with her many handcrafted pressed-flower cards and gifts will think of Mary fondly as well. Mary was also a writer, a poet, an expert seamstress, and could even play the piano by ear.

Mary loved Jesus. As a faithful member of First Baptist Church, she rocked many babies during church. She loved her Sunday School class, and she read constantly about living the Christian life and putting it into action.

Mary was preceded in death by her siblings: Lee, Len, Alice, Jessie (Bill), Ed (Shorty), Flora, Marion, Tressie, Bessie and Bert; by her daughter, Regina LaLuz, and her longtime friend from childhood, Syble King West.

Mary leaves behind many special friends and companions who graced her life with love and devotion: Lou Jamison, Helen Tommey, Mary Ponder, Caroline Bell, Autrea Nail, and nephew, James Clemmons.
