Mineral Springs teams fifth in district track meet

trackMINERAL SPRINGS – The Mineral Springs Hornets and Lady Hornets finished fifth in district Wednesday during the 7-2A West conference meet. Gurdon won both divisions, while Murfreesboro’s girls finished as runners up and their boys took third.


Tyler Villegas headlined the Hornets’ collective performance, winning the high jump with a 6’4” leap, but it was freshman newcomer Octavian Caesar who placed in the most events, taking seventh in the 100m dash (12.02) and long jump (19’7”) as well as fifth in the triple jump (41’10”).
The only other Hornet to score was Kevonte Esters, who took second in the 400m dash with 54.75 and third in the 110m hurdles with a 17.43 performance.
Also competing in the men’s division was Layne McWhorter, who took second in the shot put for Dierks with a 44’10” throw, while classmate Cameron Brewer claimed seventh in the discus with a 108’6.5” effort.
In the ladies’ division, Mineral Springs was led, as it has been all year, by Briara Sanders, who won the 300m hurdles in 48.18 and the triple jump with a 36’1” effort. Sanders also placed second in the high jump (4’8”) and long jump (15’9.75”) as well as earning fourth place honors in the 100m dash (13.67) and fifth in the 200m dash (30.23).
Mikayla Smith also scored for the Lady Hornets, taking fifth in the triple jump with a 31’10” performance and sixth in the 400m dash (1:11.86) and 100m hurdles (20.50).
The only other girl to compete for Mineral Springs was Nikiesha Butler, who claimed seventh in the discus with a throw of 69’10”.
